The Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics of the University of Zurich invites applications for a
Professorship (Open Rank) in Large-Scale Systems
The position can be filled at any level (Assistant with Tenure-Track, Tenured Associate or Full Professor), starting at the earliest in Fall 2026.
Candidates applying for an Assistant Professorship shall hold, at the time of appointment, a Ph.D. degree in computer science or a closely related field and have an excellent research record in large-scale systems. Candidates applying for Associate or Full Professorship shall demonstrate excellent teaching abilities at both undergraduate and graduate levels and have an internationally leading research profile in large-scale systems.
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research in any of the following broad areas:
The successful candidate will be expected to be able and willing to teach a broad range of topics, in particular Database and Data Management Systems, Systems for Data Science and AI.
The performance evaluation of the candidates will be undertaken in line with DORA and the Open Science Policy of the University of Zurich. - Scalability and Performance: Design and implementation of multi-component systems that can handle efficiently increasing amounts of work and data by scaling up (enhancing single components) and scaling out (adding more components); Performance optimization using load balancing, caching strategies, and parallel processing; Programming abstractions that allow seamless development of scalable software.
- Systems for Data Science: Efficient and scalable processing of large volumes of relational, heterogeneous, or fast evolving data; Optimization of resource utilization for data management and machine learning workloads.
- System Design and Architecture: Management of computer resources, such as allocation, virtualization, containerization, and energy efficiency.
