For the Editorial Development unit within the “Academic & Research” arm of Karger Publishers, we are looking for a motivated person to join our organization as a
Publication Manager (80-100%)
Location: UK (remote work only) or Switzerland (hybrid)
Full time position – 40 hours per week. Applicants for an 80% pro-rata contract will also be considered.
Reporting to the Head of Editorial Development, you will be working independently within an agreed strategic framework to manage and develop a subset of Karger’s portfolio of academic journals. The role can be based in our Basel office with a flexible remote office policy (hybrid) or based in the UK (home-based/remote only)
This multifaceted role includes:
- Independently managing a portfolio of peer reviewed journals and related products/services in assigned subject area(s), including driving and monitoring the progress of publications towards defined targets in terms of content, usage, quality, and reputation
- Building and fostering strong relationships with editorial boards and societies (if relevant), subject area-specific communities, and networks of key opinion leaders
- Representing and promoting the publication portfolio and Karger to external stakeholders
- Point person providing subject/ publication-specific insights for other Karger departments and within Editorial Development
- Representing Editorial Development in company-wide projects and taskforces
- Travelling occasionally to key scientific conferences and meetings with editors
Qualification and experience required:
- Ph.D. in life sciences with extensive knowledge of the research landscape
- Significant editorial experience in scientific journal publishing (including open access)
- Previous experience in journal development and/or content commissioning preferred
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
- A collaborative, forward-thinking mindset with a strategic, problem-solving approach
- Strong organizational skills and ability to navigate tight deadlines with precision
