Department of Quantitative Biomedicine
Postdoctoral researcher in microbiology 100 %
Start of employment upon agreement, temporaryThe Department of Quantitative Biomedicine is an interdisciplinary biomedical research unit that combines basic science with biotechnological and medical research, using both experimental and computational approaches. Within this environment, the Kümmerli lab investigates human bacterial pathogens. They combine eco-evolutionary concepts with molecular and imaging techniques to understand how pathogens interact, evolve, and drive disease. They further aim to harness knowledge on bacterial interaction mechanisms to develop new treatment approaches
Your responsibilities
We seek a postdoctoral researcher to join our team and to engage in our studies on polymicrobial infections with the aim to understand how pathogen interactions affect virulence and host mortality. The project uses Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a focal species and explores how this pathogen interacts with other common nosocomial pathogens at the molecular and behavioural level. The project involves genetic manipulation of strains, conducting gene-reporter assays, single-cell time-laps microscopy, flowcytometry, and infection experiments using zebrafish embryos as model hosts. This postdoctoral position entails the opportunity to supervise PhD and Master students.
Your profile
- A Ph. D. degree in microbiology, systems biology, molecular biology, biomedicine, or a related field. Prior postdoctoral experience is not required.
- We seek a highly motivated and innovative scientist who is eager to learn new approaches and is able to work independently. Furthermore, we seek a friendly and open personality to complete our team.
- The applicant should have substantial experience in working with human bacterial pathogens at biosafety level 2.
- Previous experience with animal host systems is advantageous but not required.
- Previous experience with time-laps microscopy and/or flowcytometry is highly desirable.
- Experience with data and statistical analysis in the R environment is required.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
