Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Sustainable UN (SUN) Unit in Geneva has a mandate to support the UN System’s internal operations as the UN strives towards continual improvement of its environmental sustainability. To further support the environmental improvements the SUN project collects annual reporting from UN entities. To further advance the System’s progress SUN is working to analysis and evaluate existing data collected from UN entities to further identify opportunities for improvement. The Sustainable UN facility project, phase IV, has an increased focus on informing and engaging senior level management and improving system-wide reporting, improving data collection and analytics in support of driving action within the UN system to improve and increase action on internal environmental sustainability. These activities are in support of the key outcome for the project: to accelerate action and mobilize UN entities to further mainstream environmental considerations into all aspects of management and operations and improve upon the monitoring, reporting, and management of environmental impacts of their internal environmental sustainability. Specifically, efforts are needed to: • Review and correct Greening the Blue data submitted by UN entities so that it can be used in the new Greening the Blue Data Platform. • Ensure quality and accuracy in imported data as well as the calculation methodologies which rely upon inputted data from the 2025 inventory process; • Support to Global Service Centre and UNEP SUN on formatting, cleaning, and uploading the “Bring Your Own” data from the 13 UN organizations accounting for approximately 80% of UN system-wide impacts. The UNEP New York Office Sustainable UN team does not have the relevant expertise in-house to carry out the required tasks and needs an external consultant. The consultant will carry out the following project tasks: • Complete importation of BYO data from Greening the Blue reporting entities into a format compatible with importation into the new data platform. • Review current Greening the Blue Data Platform to ensure accurate calculations and processing of results for entity-level, regional, and country-level reporting. • Research and identify appropriate calculation methodologies for updating platform and IMP • Provide inputs to Global Service Centre inline with results calculations and report generation.

Qualifications/special skills

• A master’s degree in an environmental field, engineering, or natural sciences is required. • At least 2 years’ experience in environmental science, engineering, and/or data analytics is required. • Experience with Python, Excel, PowerBI or similar software is required. • Experience with Annual Greenhouse Gas Inventories is required. • Experiences in scenario forecasting, and/or carbon footprinting is an asset. • Experience with international organizations and Greening the Blue is highly desired. Key Skills: • Knowledge of the UN system and culture and familiarity with UN interagency networks is desired, • Creative, autonomous, and resourceful strategist with a track record of proactivity, • Proficiency in data analytic software applications, • Excellent interpersonal communication and exposure to cross-cultural and multi-ethnic working environments.

Languages

For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
