Job Description
This is a 12 (100% work time) - 15 (80% work time) month temporary position.
The position is in the Catastrophe Research team, based in Zürich, and is part of the larger Catastrophe Underwriting Office, which is responsible for catastrophe risk modeling, research and portfolio analytics.
The Research team is comprised of a group of highly skilled applied scientists, whose expertise is utilized throughout the company to support risk transfer decisions based on a robust scientifically based view of catastrophe risk.
Key responsibilities:
Your core responsibility is to develop and support PartnerRe’s view of catastrophe risk by providing a broad range of expertise in flood risk modeling.
During this temporary position you will focus on quantifying the risk-of-loss from floods in different regions of the world and lead the development of a modeling framework using external (vendor) model products.
You will:
- Contribute to the research, development and maintenance of PartnerRe’s proprietary & vendor risk model suite with emphasis on flood hazard assessment.
- Acquire expertise on third party flood model products and perform evaluation and validation studies. Make use of academic literature and datasets to benchmark these products.
- Acquire a practical understanding of flood vulnerabilities for commonly insured buildings and contents.
- Develop analysis tools to evaluate flood model products and implement results in flood risk assessments for business decisions.
- Collaborate, develop and share code with the team.
- Communicate results to business stakeholders and provide research, modeling and training support to end-users.
Technical skills/competencies:
A quantitative and analysis-based approach to problem solving with extensive programming experience (in R, Python or a similar language).
Behavioural competencies:
You are a passionate scientist or engineer wanting to apply your deep scientific and technical knowledge to the problem of making risk transfer decisions.
Quantifying the impact of natural catastrophes on our business is by its nature uncertain, but you enjoy the challenge of balancing these uncertainties, using your creative skills and science where it can make a difference to the task at hand. Further you have:
- Ability to work well in a team and to contribute towards common goals.
- Pro-active, solution oriented with a high level of self-initiative.
- Good communication skills with the ability to present complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.
- Proficient (written and verbal) in English, other languages are a plus
Work experience:
Ideally experience in: flood risk assessment and / or vulnerability and building stock assessment, and / or catastrophe modelling and model development and / or (re)insurance industry would be an advantage.
Qualifications
Education:
A PhD or a Master’s degree plus equivalent scientific experience, in the field of hydrology, meteorology or climatology, or a related discipline.
Due to legal restrictions, we can only consider candidates who are either EU or Swiss citizens, or otherwise entitled to work in Switzerland.
