As a EHS Specialist - Radiation Safety Specialist you will:

This role has general knowledge in most areas within EHS, however, they are considered an expert in one or more laboratory risk mitigation fields.

The Radiation Safety Specialist (RSS) in Switzerland is responsible for implementing radiation protection rules within the organization. The person holding the authorization to handle/store radioactive materials, or the person managing the company, is accountable for compliance with radiation protection regulations.

The RSS is tasked with implementing legal requirements and developing operational radiation protection guidelines, as well as overseeing their enforcement within the organization. They must possess the necessary knowledge, training, and experience in radiation protection to ensure effective protection of people and the environment.

Radiation Safety Specialist - General:

• Act as a liaison between the site and authorities.
• Keep EHS informed about authorization developments and employee exposure.
• Conduct periodic audits of the radiation protection program.
• Ensure compliance with radiation protection regulations and authorization conditions (e.g., equipment operation checks, construction measures, room indications).
• Designate personnel professionally exposed to radiation and implement a dosimetry program.
• Prepare a report on the entry/exit of radioactive substances.
• Maintain all required records.

Training and Continuing Education in Radiation Protection:

• Develop and document a concept for employee instruction, initial training, and continuing education (in collaboration with EHS).
• Verify the behavior of individuals exposed to radiation in their professional activities to ensure compliance with radiation protection rules (e.g., behavior in controlled or monitored areas).

Technical & Operational Tasks:

• Ensure doses are ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) and that the approach can be used for application and adaptation to the company's operating conditions.
• Ensure measuring instruments are maintained according to manufacturer specifications, are operational, and are calibrated according to SUVA publication 66098 (Radiation Protection Measuring Instruments: Requirements and Control).
• Coordinate the maintenance, condition control, and stability checks required by law for the entire facility and monitor quality assurance measures.
• Supervise major decontamination efforts.
• Review and approve (if applicable) proposed uses of radioactive materials.
• Ensure release and decontamination after cessation of activities involving radioactive materials (work surfaces, floors, professional clothing, protective containers, etc.).
• Ensure the effectiveness of the contamination monitoring program in areas where radioactivity is used or stored.
• Ensure appropriate radiation protection devices are available in sufficient quantities and are maintained or replaced as necessary (protective masks, shields, protective aprons, filters, auxiliary supplies, etc.).
• Annually check the correct functioning of protective measures.
• Establish controlled or monitored areas to limit and control radiation exposure.
• Control the planning and execution of radiation protection measures related to construction (shielding).
• Periodically check the ambient dose rate inside and outside the controlled area according to Annex 2 OUMR [7]; OFSP directive on guideline values for ambient dose rates [8].

Failure Management:

• Establish and periodically reassess spill response procedures.
• Investigate any incident and respond to any emergency involving radioactive materials, ensuring documentation of events and measures taken.

Waste Management:

• Organize waste management within the company (collection, labeling, storage, disposal, and release into the environment).
• Organize delivery within the framework of the annual OFSP collection action (art. 119 ORaP [3]), in case of use of isotopes with a long half-life.
• Control inactive waste (release).
• Monitor radioactive wastewater control facilities (activity concentrations, emission limits according to arts. 24 and 112 and Annex 7 ORaP [3], verify the tightness of wastewater control facilities).
• Establish a balance sheet and register of all releases into the environment of radioactive materials whose activity exceeds the release limit indicated in Annex 3, column 9, ORaP [3] (art. 37 OUMR [7]).

EHS Specialist II - General:

• Strong knowledge of laboratory EHS support fields such as chemical, biological, radiation, waste, industrial hygiene or equivalent.
• Manage specialist contractors such as Radiation Protection Advisor
• Provide specialist advise to other EMEA Labcorp locations
• Maintenance of EHS programs, including document content development and review.
• Manages and coordinate regulatory permits, reports and audits.
• Develops and delivers EHS trainings.
• May support EHS programs for more than one location.
• Engages in sustainability initiatives.
• Participate in risk assessments.
• Conducts incident investigation, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and closure.
• May act as emergency coordinator and lead spill response.
• Provides first aid and CPR on an emergency basis.
• Conducts internal facility EHS inspections.
• Other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

• Bachelor’s degree in science or technical field
• Experience of 4 years, working with or managing radioactive material
• EHS qualification or at least 2 years of EHS related experience such as participation in developing or managing a safety program for chemical, biological, radiation or equivalent fields.
• Radiation protection expert for the use of unsealed radioactive materials in a B/C work area: I1 certification
• SST certification
• Federal diploma in occupational health and safety (STPS) or Safety officer MSST
• Enrollment in continuing education and development is strongly encouraged.
• Must demonstrate both technical knowledge and essential skills in EHS related field; as required by local requirements
• Experience within a laboratory, manufacturing or research environment
• General knowledge of regional regulatory laws to include, chemical, biological, radiation or equivalent requirements.
• Strong document management skills and attention to details.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in both French and English
• Proficiency in computer programs/software such as Microsoft Office.
• Must have ability to plan, prioritize, and complete multiple projects.
• Ability to self-lead tasks to completion.
• Must be able to work well in a team environment and independently.
• Comfortable with public speaking opportunities to varying audiences

Working Conditions:

• General office and laboratory environment.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection.
• Ability to lift at least 25 pounds.
• Able to work in noisy environments.
• Comfortable working in and around vivarium’s as applicable.
• Able to work at a computer as well as walk around location, entering laboratories and facility support spaces.
• Non-routine on-call, emergency response, if business need
• May travel to other Labcorp locations up to 5%.
